Traffic Behavioural Surveys

Headway Surveys

This is required to establish warrants for the level of service unsignalized intersections, right turning facilities, merging capacities at freeways ramps and freeway section capacities.

Travel Time Surveys

This is required as part of before-and-after studies for the introduction of new road facilities (i.e. one-ways) and for new or revised bus routes.

Traffic Queue And Delay Surveys

Provide valuable information on the length of queues at intersections and the amount of delay experienced by road users due to road, traffic characteristics at intersections, intersection saturation flow rates and total traffic delays.  Delays are used to establish the functionality and performance of the road, and of traffic control devices and traffic congestion.  In line with the requirements of the new SARTSM Vol. 3, applicable to all SADC countries, queue lengths are require to establish the warrants for signalisation of intersections.

Road Side Interviews

This can provide a huge amount of information with regard to the perception of road users, their needs and requirements and the characteristics of drivers and vehicles using the road.  This information is valuable to give an indication of the typical flow patterns, origin and destinations of vehicles, purposes for using certain routes, frequency of road/route usage, other facilities required/preferred along routes, etc.

Speed Surveys

This is conducted at a specific location for establishing the speed characteristic of the entire traffic stream at such a location.  Depending on the application, the 85th or 50th percentile is calculated.  The application for this information includes the establishment of speed zones and operational speed of the traffic stream at the location, establishing the need for traffic calming, timing to traffic signals, checking of speed trends, analysing accident experience, checking the need for advisory safe speed posting, checking for enforcement needs and dealing with complaints for speeding.
